Winnies February 2007 Outing By Gloria Caffrey Seventeen DuBol Winnies coaches met on a chilly February weekend at the Traveler’s Campground in Alachua, Florida for a “50’s and 60s” theme weekend hosted by Jim & Cindy Hoffren and John & Carol Haefer. Most of the attendees arrived early and enjoyed steak dinners on Thursday night in historic downtown Alachua at the Conestoga Restaurant. There was not much outdoor acitivity due to the cold, except for those who had to walk their dogs. On Friday some of the members visited the downtown area shops, enjoying the artistic flavor and offerings of this small town. Many of the ladies met in the Rec Hall on Friday afternoon to work on the special club shirts for the March WinnieGators state meeting. Many thanks to Sue Poss who designed the shirts and stood by to help whenever needed. Following Happy Hour our hosts served chicken breast sandwiches with picnic-style trimmings for a hearty dinner. Our expert cake-baker, Jennie Pikula treated us to her fabulous homemade German chocolate cake for dessert. On a very cold Saturday morning, with temperatures in the low 20s, some club members were up at the crack of dawn preparing and baking breakfast casseroles for our breakfast pot-luck. What a spread!! Following this huge meal, the club conducted it’s business meeting and welcomed new members, Reggie & Cora Roper who arrived in their brand new 2007 Suncruiser. A few members were noted to be nodding off during the meeting …too much egg & sausage casserole!! On Saturday afternoon the ladies finished their shirts while the men visited and did minor repairs on their motorhomes. We gathered again for an evening meal of baked lasagna, tossed salad, garlic bread and a cake to celebrate the club’s 32nd birthday. Cindy Hoffren, the retired school teacher, then led her unruly class in a game of 50’s and 60’s trivia questions, with Dot & Bob Terry winning the highest score. But wait…there’s more!! Carol Haefer walked us down another memory lane by challenging us to identify the “Who Am I?” photos provided by club members during their school-age years. My how we have changed!! On Sunday morning we met for a continental breakfast and leftovers, and thanked our hosts for a great weekend, and an opportunity to learn how to use our microwave/convection ovens. We parted ways hoping that our plants at home didn’t suffer too badly from the hard freeze, and looking forward to seeing everyone again at the next rally. February, 2007
