September 2007 Outing

By Gloria Caffrey

Ten coaches traveled through storms of love bugs to central Florida and met at The Springs RV Resort in Silver Springs, Florida for the September campout.  Early arrivals avoided  the hot, humid weather with an  indoor Happy Hour followed by dinner at OutBack Steak House.  Some of the ladies managed to squeeze in a game of Push Rummy before bedlam broke loose in the form of another storm, this one featuring 4 hours of  thunder, lightening, torrential rains, and tornados within 10 miles of the park.  What a night!!

Friday the storms stayed away until later in the day, giving the group time to clean coaches, shop, or tour the local Silver Springs Park.  This park is described as Nature’s Theme Park and features river cruises, wildlife exhibits, botanical gardens, rides and concerts.  It is a beautiful example of “old Florida” with lush foliage, water birds, alligators and crystal clear waters. Back at the campground the group enjoyed dinner out followed by cards or socializing.

A wonderful potluck breakfast started the day on Saturday, with our many good cooks showing off their skills with egg casseroles, waffles, and breakfast meats and breads.  Somehow we managed to stay awake for our morning business meeting where we welcomed our guests, Jim & Barbara Moore from Crestview, Florida.  Members went their separate ways and then reconvened for an outdoor Happy Hour with weather cooperating.  As if we hadn’t eaten enough, we all contributed to an evening potluck dinner with ham, veggies, salads, rolls, beef stew, and cake & ice cream for Gloria Caffrey’s birthday.  After dinner Jim Moore provided some impromptu entertainment with his folksy story of Poverty Creek, followed by a rousing group game of card Bingo.

Sunday morning we gathered in the rec hall, ate leftovers, drank coffee, and said our good-byes until the next campout.
