Panhandle  Winnies
                                   Local Chapter
                    May 2002 Outing

                                        By Jan Eichorst

The Panhandle Winnies met at Wolf Bay Plantation just three miles south of
Elberta, Alabama for their May campout.  Wolf Bay Plantation is a
beautifully maintained RV park that is in the process of expanding their
grounds by building new drive-through concrete camping spaces just for
visiting clubs and chapters as well as overnighters.  They have a spacious
clubhouse with enough room to handle large or small groups complemented by a
large kitchen that allows several people to prepare and serve food.  The
campground has a well laid out walking path along a local stream for those
who desire a pleasant stroll through the South Alabama coastal woods.  You
are close to the Alabama Gulf Coast beaches, several golf courses, and the
Riviera Factory Stores Shopping Center for those so inclined to spread their
hard earned money around the economy.  For this campout, our weekend wagon
masters, Jim and Diane Guckin along with Peg and Jack Slevin, arrived early
on Thursday along with three other member units to begin the campout and
welcome the rest of the 10 member coaches arriving on Friday.

Although we experience wind, rain, and cooler temperatures as a weather
front passed through the area Friday night, our friendly gathering with warm
discussions generated its own sunshine.  We spent Friday afternoon catching
up on the events in our lives that had passed since our last meeting.  Liz
and Earle Hedenberg told us of their special cruise up the Alaskan coast
that doubled as their 50th wedding anniversary celebration.  That evening,
we met at the clubhouse to enjoy a potluck meal with everyone chipping in on
the menu and taking pleasure in the outcome.  After our meal, we played
several games of cards with Hand and Foot being the most popular capturing
two tables of players.

Saturday morning the wagon masters treated our group with stacks of
delicious pancakes that were light to the taste accompanied with plenty of
sausage, orange juice, and piping hot coffee.  Following the morning
breakfast, we held our monthly meeting and discussed the members traveling
to this years GNR.  The wind and rain persisted throughout the morning and
early afternoon keeping the outdoor activities to transitioning from our
coaches to our cars to the clubhouse.  There were several tables of card
players with loads of good conversation.  That evening, our members traveled
about 5 minutes south of the campground to the Wolf Bay Lodge for dinner.
The lodge is well-established restaurant having been a center of dining in
that area for years.  To ensure that we got seated together, we had to
arrive 15 minutes early for our 5:00 PM meal.  At 5:15, it was very
understandable as to why we had to arrive and eat early.  Every table was
full of friendly vacationers and local residents.  There were plenty of
choices of delicious dishes on the menu that was heavily influenced by the
local seafood.  Following our meal, we met back at the clubhouse for another
evening of conversation and card playing.  Hand and Foot was the game of the
evening again with several of our members learning the game.

Our Sunday breakfast consisted of eye-opening hot coffee, orange juice, and
piles of fresh biscuits to spread with assorted jellies or coat with sausage
gravy.  This was followed by long good-bys and good wishes for the summer's
activities.  Our chapter will not meet in the months of June, July, and
August.  The next scheduled campout is September 13-15 at Luxury RV, Gulf
Shores, Alabama.
