South Florida Winnie-Gators

FEBRUARY  2006  OUTING REPORT

By Marlene Sholtes

The Marina RV Resort in Moore Haven was the site of our February campout.  18 rigs attended.  Most rigs arrived on Thursday to the news that, due to the high volume of campers in Florida in the winter, we had to accept sites with no electricity.  But most of our brave, stalwart members decided they could survive the weekend without full hookups.  Some elected to stay in some sites where they could be squeezed in, in order to have electricity.  The area where we were parked was along the banks of the rim canal.  We were able to watch the beautiful boats go through the locks right next to us.

We were all very interested in the huge alligator resting on the grass on our way to the clubhouse.  He must have been 12 feet long and weigh 500 lbs. We had no volunteers to go and measure him though.

We were all very happy to see Conrad and Ruth Treusch.  Conrad had surgery last week and is recovering nicely.  He thanked everyone for the cards, e-mails and phone calls.

Some of us suffered bad sunburns on our faces while enjoying the warm, bright sunshine during happy hour.  The wind was blowing so you could not feel the burn happening.

Thursday evening we were treated to clam chowder and corn on the cob prepared by George Shaughnessy and W.C. Herndon.

Friday morning, Marlene Sholtes helped the remainder of the members finish their shirts for the March State Rally.  Helper husband Joe helped a few members make some CD spinners for their awnings.

The campground offers a dinner which most of us took advantage of on Friday   Delicious chicken, potatoes, beans, salad and cake for dessert.  In the evening, some gathered outside to greet a few late arrivals.  Harvey Peacock entertained everyone with his songs and guitar.

John and Marlyn Fischer have visited our club meetings many times, and now that they have retired, decided to join our chapter.  We are honored to have them.  Also visiting, was our newest members John and Marijo Bieries brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jerine Bierie.

We were visited by the Sweetheart Raffle Babes, Becky Bunn and Damaris Travers during our Saturday evening happy hour.  Lee Macdonald, Becky Bunn and George Shaughnessy prepared salad, ziti and meatballs.  Delicious!

A Valentine Dance took place in the campground rec hall.  Many attended and reported the music was great!

Sunday morning we braved the cold, windy weather to have some English Muffins and cream cheese outdoors and to say our good-byes until we meet again.
