SOUTH FLORIDA WINNIE-GATORS
March 2007
OUTING REPORT

By Marlene Sholtes

Clerbrook RV & Golf Resort was the site of our March meeting.  A total of 28 member rigs and one guest rig attended.  We welcomed the following guests:  Dick and Sandie Williamson from Sebastian, FL; Chuck and Joan Seager’s son, Ray; and George and Frankie Morgan’s daughter, Stephanie and her friend Jason who both stayed for dinner Saturday evening.  Clerbrook is a massive campground attached to a huge golf course which a few of our members took advantage of.  The weather couldn’t have been better.  The recreation hall was very large.  On Friday most members ordered pizza which were delivered to the hall.

Friday morning weather was a bit blustery, cloudy, but warm.  At happy hour we had a 50/50 Raffle, and the Raffle-Babes-In-Training were Mo Shaughnessy and Rose Weisman.  We presented a plaque to W.C. and Helen Herndon for their many years of service in the chapter.  They plan to travel more now in their new motor home.  During happy hour, Marcel Drapeau made his famous funnel cakes for everyone.  They were quite a hit!  Barbara and Marcel Drapeau prepared and cooked great hamburgers for our evening meal, and Damaris Travers made five different varieties of baked beans!  Mo Shaughnessy honored her mother and father with a birthday cake for their recent birthdays.

Our entertainment for the evening was our new favorite card game, Chase the Ace.  This game makes the Rowdy Bunch even rowdier.  There were 46 players on two tables and the winners were Chuck Seager (again!) and Ray Heath.

Saturday morning our faithful cooks, Rick Bunn, George Shaughnessy, Bob Gill, Ed Miles and Bruce Cheatum whipped up scrambled eggs with ham, hash browns and English muffins.  Our favorite “Coffee Nazi” Charlie Travers served up the coffee as usual.  Lee Macdonald showed how to make Easter Bunnies from a towel and wash cloths.  Members were very happy with the way their bunnies turned out.  Joe Sholtes helped the last remaining members made hats to be worn at the State Rally when our club will serve ice cream.

Saturday afternoon became much cooler and very damp!  It was a challenge for the cooks of the evening meal, Bob Gill and George Shaughnessy, to boil up the corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots outside!  But it all came out delicious anyway!  Meanwhile, our happy hour Green-Haired Irish Raffle Babes did a great job of selling tickets for the many great prizes.  The bartenders, Joe Sholtes and Chuck Seager, and assisted by Ken Perry, kept up with the demand of the large group.  After our evening meal, Damaris Travers and Barbara Drapeau served Irish Coffee.  Our entertainment was the Blarney Stone Game, directed by Becky Bunn.  There were 12 players, six men and six women.  The men had 30 seconds to give a line of “Blarney” to the lovely ladies.  They moved on and the ladies scored the “Blarney”.  The winner was Ray Babisi (no surprise!).  Besides Ray, the players were Grace Babisi, Bruce Cheatum, Linda Cheatum, Bill English, John Fischer, Joan Heath, Edna Heins, Harvey Peacock, Ingrid Purvis, Peter Vandervlugt, and Rose Weisman.  Wish we all could have heard the blarney.  Fun time was had by all.  After all this excitement, Harvey Peacock serenaded members who remained in the hall.  They were joined by some visiting Canadians who joined in a sing-a-long.

After our Sunday morning breakfast of eggs, pancakes and coffee, we had our monthly meeting.  The day returned to beautiful warm Florida weather.  Most of the members were staying at the campground until we drove to the FL State Rally in Orlando in a few days.

There were 23 South Florida rigs lined up to enter the Orlando Fairgrounds for the FL State Rally.  We went in together so we could park together, which worked out very nicely.  We enjoyed a few happy hours and 50/50 Raffles.  Our assignment for this year was the Ice Cream Social.  We were well-staffed and handed out ice cream cups to everyone.  There never was a line because we had so much help!  The ladies wore tee-shirts with ice cream cones painted on them, and we all wore soda jerk hats we had made for the event.  We all had a very good time as usual!
