South Florida Winnie-Gators

MAY 2005 Outing Report
By Lee Macdonald

Our May outing was held in Fort Lauderdale at Paradise Island RV Park.  19 rigs attended and enjoyed the weekend under sunny skies and great weather.  Many of the members arrived on Thursday. It was good to see Chuck & Maryann Liotti this weekend after a long absence due to Chuck’s knee surgery.  That evening several groups formed and ventured out to different restaurants in the area.

Friday morning the ladies met at the clubhouse and began decorating T-shirts.  The theme Damaris Travers came up with was “I Love My ____”.  The blank was filled in with Winnebago, Itasca, Journey, etc. She brought in her treasure trove of assorted fabrics and paints. Marlene Sholtes and Lee Macdonald provided lettering stencils and RV silhouettes. Each lady had a different colored shirt and selected a different pattern print for the letters. Each shirt was uniquely distinctively different.

Supper was a simple meal of hot dogs and beans.  It was followed by a fun game of Yankee Trader, where each person brings a gift in a plain brown paper bag and numbers are drawn to select prize winners. The first drawn takes a gift and opens it to show all. Person having the next number drawn gets to take previously opened gift or an unknown form the table. There were a few gifts that changed hands many times such as lottery tickets and some beautifully decorated bottles of wine. This game has no losers because everyone winds up with a gift.

Saturday morning breakfast of waffles and fresh fruit was enjoyed by all. The rest of the morning was spent working on the T-shirts.

Our happy hour and raffle was held out on the breezy covered patio. It was good to see Del Butcher back behind the bar along with Ken Perry & Joe Sholtes. Del has been unable to attend recent outings because of family illness.  Our raffle babes, Becky & Damaris sported snappy pink straw hats and sold gangs of tickets. Some nice prizes were won by happy lucky ticket holding members.

Bob & Joan Gill prepared Bar-B-Que chicken which WC Herndon helped finish grilling when Bob’s back decided to act up.  It was delicious as were all the great sides the members provided.

Sunday morning we enjoyed bagels and cream cheese with belated Mother’s Day Mimosas before our monthly meeting. Afterward we said our good-bys. Many of our snow-bird members are returning north and others have started their summer vacations. Those of us that will be here in June are looking forward to our next outing in the Florida Keys.
