Spacecoast Winnies
April 2004 Outing
By Lynn Fitts
The Space Coast Winnies held their April
campout at the Holiday Travel Park in Cypress Gardens, FL.
There were 11 member coaches in attendance. The Russell’s,
Fitt’s, and Stedman’s were early arrivals on Thursday to get the
weekend underway.
Rigs began rolling in Friday morning and everyone
took their time settling in before stopping by the Fitts’ Adventurer for
Social Hour. All were happy to see that Herb Jones was with us,
after having to leave ill from the March Rally in Orlando. We were
especially glad to meet our newest members Pat & Harold Hayward and
Verna & George Ward, snowbirds who come to our area from New York
State each winter. We look forward to many campouts with them.
Cooks, Dick Russell and Dudley Young grilled the
most delicious hamburgers for our dinner on Friday. Nancy Russell
had made broccoli slaw and Rose Young prepared macaroni salad for great
accompaniments. The meal rounded out with lemon and German chocolate
cakes and boy, was everyone stuffed.
With our new members, of course, teaching them
"our way" for some card games came next. Dick Russell was
the sole male member of the card group for our first night.
The cooks were at it again early Saturday with
French toast and sausages. Jimmy Fitts came in early and helped with
one of the griddles.
Soon after breakfast our new treasurer, Jack Harris, collected camping
fees, assisted by wife Carolyn and our regular chapter meeting followed.
There are many sightseeing opportunities in the Winter Haven area.
Unfortunately, Cypress Gardens had not reopened but the Wards and Haywards
took their motor scooters to Bok Tower and pleasantly found
themselves attending a wedding in that beautiful spot. Others
visited the Florida’s Natural museum that depicts the orange juice
industry that is prevalent in the area; and still others "shopped
till they dropped" at a local department store.
It was soon time to eat again and everyone
enjoyed a delicious Saturday night dinner of stuffed chicken supplied by
the Chapter, with salads, vegetables and desserts supplied by
members.
A light Sunday morning breakfast was before
leaving for home. With beautiful weather and great camaraderie this
was another great campout by our Chapter.
The next campout will be at the Florida State
Club meeting in Eustis, FL May 14-16.
